When we go to the doctor’s office, we usually trust that their expertise
and experience are enough to provide a correct diagnosis. However, many
patients may find themselves the victim of a misdiagnosis when under the
care of a health professional. While not every instance of
misdiagnosis is avoidable, there are things you can do to help protect yourself against
a misdiagnosis and medical malpractice.
If your doctor gives you an unfavorable diagnosis you should:
- do independent research about the condition or illness you have been diagnosed with;
- ask the doctor how he came to the conclusion of your condition and if you
can be tested again to make sure it is accurate; and
- seek a second opinion from another trusted physician or specialist.
Many patients may be afraid or intimidated to question a doctor’s
diagnosis, but doing so could mean the difference between life and death.
Always remember that you do not have to accept point-blank what a doctor
says to you. If you believe you have been misdiagnosed and treated incorrectly
or unnecessarily, you may be eligible to file a claim of medical malpractice.
